DigiBioTech will create a leading hub on the application of artificial intelligence for Biotechnology. Building on successful track records in biocatalysis and artificial intelligence, our project will have impact on the field far beyond the sum of its parts and thus put TU Graz at the forefront of AI-inspired engineering of proteins and bioprocesses.
In the area of protein engineering, the project will apply AI in order to a achieve better quantitative prediction of sequence-to-function relationships aiming to create enzymes with new function, to improve function, and to identify function in Nature. In bioprocess engineering, synthetic, simulation-based, data will be used to train AI models for process intensification and up-scale.
DigiBioTech strives to match the acquisition of high-quality data sets with the development of suitable learning methods. The newly developed technologies will be applied to solve pressing challenges such as the degradation of persistent pollutants and the development of renewable bioproduction processes.
Our project is unique in Austria and internationally, as it brings together people with multidisciplinary talents and a common interest across biochemistry, process engineering, biophysical and bioprocess modeling, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. DigiBioTech will connect with local and international industries and foster strong academic-industry links that will enable industries to better access local talent and foster knowledge exchange.
